Robert was born in Borrowash, Derbyshire, England, on the 6th April, 1893. He enlisted in Winnipeg, Manitoba, 28th February 1916, stating his occupation as a clerk, and his next of kin as his brother, Stuart Juffs, of Udney, Ontario. He gave his place of residence as the Imperial Hotel, Winnipeg.
He was five feet eight and three quarter inches in height, had a fair complexion, grey eyes and black hair, and was a Methodist. He had an eight year old vaccination mark on his left arm, and ring worm on his left wrist.
